SAMPLE TESTIMONY

Dear City Council Member(s) __________________________:

I am writing to support City Council resolution #04-255, urging Mayor Harris to not go forward with his planned $6.1 million dollar Natatorium "patch up" until he provides the Council with plans, full construction and maintenance costs, and permits for the entire Natatorium project. We deserve to know how much this unwanted "swimming pool in the ocean" restoration will cost us in the long run.

According to engineering reports posted on www.savekaimanabeach.org there are serious concerns regarding the structural integrity of the bleachers, bathrooms, and entire land based portion of the Natatorium. Bathrooms are now locked after we spent $4.4 million just four years ago because a massive support beam in the ladies room suffered a ten-foot crack. The restored bleachers have cracked and are crumbling.

Taxpayers need to know how much it will cost to fix the land based portion of the Natatorium if the condition is as bad as the engineering reports make reference to. Would the entire structure need to be replaced? If so how much would that cost? These are important questions that we, as a community, must have answers to before we throw more good money after bad.

I further support resolution #04-256 that calls for less expensive solutions to the perceived Natatorium public safety issue. Mayor Harris is using public safety as the reason for this expensive and unnecessary expenditure of tax payer money. Building a better surrounding fence and hiring a security guard to keep the public out of the Natatorium would answer the safety question and save millions of tax dollars.

I support the idea of a "Memorial Beach" as proposed by the Kaimana Beach Coalition. This would save untold millions of dollars and provide Honolulu with a Memorial Arch, a new two-acre beach, protective beach groins, a five hundred yard near shore swimming course, a volleyball court, and public bathroom facilities that work. This plan would cost only a fraction of the potential restored Natatorium expenses. Please ask that Mayor Harris not go forward with his wasteful and unpopular plan.

Thank you,
